This category is difficult to measure since there is no formal mechanism to track each time such drugs are used.
“According to Guttmacher (Planned Parenthood’s research arm), 161,100, or about 13% of all abortions performed in 2005, were described as ‘early medication’ or chemical abortions. About 90% of those involved RU486, a two-drug abortion technique that employs RU486 and the prostaglandin misoprostol. Guttmacher estimates that 70,500 women used the chemical method in 2001, meaning its use had more than doubled.”¹
Estimates show that about 10,000,000 abortions by emergency contraception may have occurred since its introduction in America.
Sales estimates for Plan B, the forerunner of emergency contraceptive drugs, were $80,000,000 in 2007. That’s 2x the 2006 figures and 8x the figure in 2004. The skyrocketing increase is largely due to Plan B receiving over-the-counter status in 2006. 2010 retail for Plan B is about $50, so assuming wholesale is about $30/dosage, that means 2,667,000 Plan B drugs were sold in 2007 – resulting in 2,677,000 possible abortions by Plan B in 2007.
